Streamflow Enhancement Hike
September 14, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
FreeJoin Sanctuary Forest on Saturday, September 14, for the Streamflow Enhancement Hike. The hike will be led by SFI Water Program Director Tasha McKee, MSG restorationist Campbell Thompson, BLM geologist Sam Flanagan, and USFWS hydrologist Conor Shea. This team has been working together for almost a decade, and will present a dynamic discussion about learning from nature to restore streams. We’ll visit a project in McKee Creek designed to increase streamflows and improve fish habitat, reconnect inset floodplains and deepen pools through the placement of log and boulder weirs and other woody structures in the streambed. After lunch we’ll carpool to another site farther up in the headwaters of the Mattole, where Sanctuary Forest is working on implementing beaver dam analogue structures – one of our newest approaches to recharging groundwater.
- Please meet at the Sanctuary Forest office in Whitethorn at 10am, we’ll carpool from there to our destinations. The hike will end at 3pm.
- Bring a lunch and plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes.
- This is a slow-moving walk through uneven terrain.
- The hike is free of charge, though donations are gladly accepted and help Sanctuary Forest offer this program year after year.
- For questions or clarifications, contact Anna at anna@sanctuaryforest.org, or call 986-1087 x 9#. Hope to see you there!
