Restoration Forestry in Action Hike

September 18, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Free

Please join Sanctuary Forest for the Restoration Forestry in Action hike on Sunday, September 18. This hike will be led by Sanctuary Forest Board President Campbell Thompson, Lands Program Director Galen Doherty, and Tim Metz of Restoration Forestry. It will be held in the Whitethorn Grove, a 40-acre parcel owned by Sanctuary Forest located just outside of the town of Whitethorn in the Mattole River headwaters. Hike leaders will take participants on a moderate-to-strenuous tour of the forest stand improvement, fuel hazard reduction, and restoration timber harvest that took place in 2015/16. Topics will include the history of forestry on the property, the use of forest management to accelerate the return of old-growth conditions, and a discussion of future stewardship projects planned for the property. This is a great way to see firsthand the use of selective thinning in a crowded, second growth forest of redwood, mixed hard wood and conifer. Meet at the Sanctuary Forest office at 10 a.m. in Whitethorn. Bring a lunch, plenty of water and wear comfortable hiking shoes. The hike will end at 3 p.m. This is a group excursion, and participants are asked to stay together at all times.

The hike is free of charge, though donations are gladly accepted and help Sanctuary Forest offer this program year after year.

Hope to see you there!
