Grassland Reclamation: Birds, Butterflies & Wildflowers

June 9, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 4:30 pm

Free

This hike was previously scheduled for May 18, but was rescheduled due to rain. Join us!

On Sunday, June 9th, Sanctuary Forest and the Fool’s Farm in Salmon Creek will host a tour/workshop of their 5-acre grassland reclamation site funded by the USFWS. The tour will be led by Kyle Keegan and Matt Cocking (NRCS). The site tour will include: the effects of conifer encroachment on local biodiversity, conifer removal strategies (including tree girdling techniques), seed collection and propagation of native grass and wildflowers, seed planting and plugging, and the use of prescribed fire as an ecological restoration tool. Participants will also be able to see restoration projects conducted in oak woodlands. During the tour we will be observing grassland wildflowers, songbirds and butterflies. Participants should bring sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection, water, and a lunch. Binoculars are encouraged. The hike will be moderate with some steep hill climbs.  Meet at 9am at Shop Smart in Redway to carpool, the tour will begin at 10am. This hike is free, but donations are accepted to help us offer this program year after year.
