Forestry Practices Hike
August 13, 2016 @ 8:30 am - 2:30 pm
FreeJoin Sanctuary Forest and the Humboldt Redwood Company as we take a look at contemporary forestry practices as applied in the Root Creek watershed, a cold-water tributary of the Van Duzen River. A forester-led examination of this year’s timber operations in the watershed along with a visit to an adjacent forest stand managed via selective silviculture several years back provides a first-hand viewing forestry and logging practices on HRC lands, and subsequent forest response following selective thinning. Accessing the harvest areas by vehicle will provide opportunity for participants to see forested conditions of HRC’s privately owned timberlands in both the Eel River and Van Duzen watersheds, followed by a moderate 1-2 hour hike of recently harvested areas. Subject matter includes applied silviculture and regeneration, logging methods, wildlife and fisheries protection, and habitat conservation planning. Come prepared for sun as well as potential cool weather and bring your lunch. Protective hiking attire recommended including stable footwear. Please meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Humboldt Redwood Company Main Office in Scotia (125 Main St.), carpool from there, and anticipate a return to Scotia no later than 2:30 p.m. Hikers are asked to bring high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles to help with car-pooling. This hike is free of charge, though donations are gladly accepted. For questions or clarifications, contact anna@sanctuaryforest.org, or visit www.sanctuaryforest.org.
