Forestry Practices Hike

August 18, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Free

Join Sanctuary Forest, Humboldt Redwood Company (HRC), and the Northcoast Regional Land Trust (NRLT) on August 18 as we look at recent forestry operations in the upper Freshwater Creek watershed on HRC timberlands in the morning and then proceed to the recently renovated Freshwater Farms Barn on Old Arcata Road for lunch and a tour of NRLT’s recent estuary restoration work adjacent lower Freshwater Creek. Participants will have the opportunity to see a variety of forested conditions and logging methods post-harvest and measures being implemented for the protection, conservation, and restoration of Humboldt Bay wildlife and fisheries.

  • Come prepared for sun as well as potential cool weather and bring your lunch.
  • Protective hiking attire recommended, including stable footwear.
  • Please meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Freshwater Farms Reserve trail parking lot on Old Arcata Road near Three Corners Market. The parking lot is a few hundred feet south of the barn and farmstand. Please do not park in front of the barn.
  • For Southern Humboldt attendees: please call 707-986-1087 x 9# to arrange carpooling if possible.
  • We will carpool from there to HRC timberlands for two moderately strenuous hikes and then return to the NRLT Freshwater Barn property for lunch and easy hike along Freshwater Creek to look at an estuary enhancement project – ‘Cows and Cattails’ – combining historical ranching around the bay with restoration.
  • Hikers are asked to bring high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles to help with carpooling.
  • The field trip will end at approximately 3:30 p.m.
  • This hike is free of charge, though donations are gladly accepted.
